Near real-time sea turbidity satellite monitoring

Planetek_Nearmap_Dredge.jpg

Intro

Very high-resolution satellite images can effectively support the monitoring of water quality during dredging activities for the installation of new off -shore infrastructures.

Background project

Saipem S.p.A, an Italian oil and gas industry contractor, which was contracted for designing and constructing several pipelines all around the world, has adopted this innovative approach in water quality monitoring. The new approach integrates traditional analysis methods with daily collections of high-resolution satellite images over the area of interest. "monitoring of water quality during dredging activities for the installation of new off-shore"

Issue and needs

During trench excavation, small soil particles remain temporary suspended in the seawater creating a peak of turbidity at the excavation time that progressively reduces its own values until reaching natural ranges. The aim of the activities described is to evaluate in near real-time the possible presence and diffusion of sediments and their impact on the surrounding area.

Proposed solution

The performed activities consisted in near real-time turbidity monitoring through high resolution satellite images. The new methodology offered by Planetek, starting from raw satellite data and through several processing steps (e.g.: atmospheric correction, conversion from digital number to reflectance), realizes a fast production of turbidity maps ready to be used few hours after the satellite acquisition.

Industry perspective

The performed activities consisted in turbidity monitoring through high-resolution satellite images, using an innovative near real-time methodology and considering as a real case of application the excavation works.

Automatic cloud-based geo-information service for the continuous monitoring of coastal seawater quality and marine resources. The protection of coasts and sea waters is one of the big pillars for the European Union. The EU has made big efforts defining common rules in Europe (e.g. Marine Strategy Framework Directive; Water Framework Directive; Common Fisheries Policy) and making huge investments in programs such as Copernicus to monitor the status of the environment and give tools to decision makers. The sustainable management of coastal and marine environment involves, both EU Member States, with their local and regional governments, which are required to monitor and report the state of the environment, and private organizations, which uses the marine resources for their business. Rheticus® Marine is an automatic cloud-based geo-information service designed to deliver fresh and accurate satellite-based data and information for the monitoring of coastal seawater quality and marine resources. Who is it for? - National and Regional Governmental Institutions in charge of environmental monitoring and reporting; - Policy and Decision Makers, from international to local level; - Stakeholders (e.g. industries involved in offshore drilling, wind plants, wastewater services, desalination, fishery and aquaculture, tourism and recreational activities, etc.); - Conservation groups. Users of the service are National and local public administrations as regions, fishing companies, aquaculture and plants operating near the coast (desalination, waste water treatments, etc.). Applications and monitoring purposes: - Coastal water quality - Reporting for the EU Marine Strategy - Level of water productivity - Algal bloom monitoring By using satellite open data – such as the ones from AQUA/MODIS, Sentinel-2 and Sentinel-3 missions –, Rheticus® Marine is able to provide information compliant with the indicators required by the EU Water and Marine Strategy Directives. The service includes a periodic (up to daily) update with monthly, quarterly and annual summary reports. Features and benefits - Timely information is provided automatically at affordable prices - Maps, reports and indices are focused and actionable, and accessible 24/7 from different platforms and devices - Reports and contents meet the requirements of national and/or regional authorities in the field of marine environment policy (i.e. EU Marine Strategy Framework Directive, EU Water Framework Directive, UN Integrated Monitoring and Assessment Programme, etc.). - Saves time and resources normally dedicated to data search and processing and information production - Data and results are standardized and comparable over time - Best cost/performance ratio thanks to open data, processing automation, and a cloud-based architecture, regardless the extension of AoI. - Overwhelming of in situ monitoring issues, efforts and costs. - Helpful to anticipate risky situations and harmful events. Automatic cloud-based monitoring for infrastructures and buildings. Monitoring is essential to assessing and predicting landslides or ground structural weaknesses, which could affect buildings or infrastructures. To get accurate information over areas subject to subsidence or slow moving landslides, in order to anticipate potential risks, is fundamental for organizations and professionals working in civil protection, master plan management and insurance. Rheticus®Displacement is an automatic cloud-based geoinformation service designed to deliver fresh and accurate satellite-based data and information for the monitoring of ground surface movements. The service provides continuous monitoring of areas subject to: - landslides, - natural- and/or human-induced subsidence in urban and suburban areas, - stability of infrastructures (e.g. dams, bridges, buildings, road and railway networks, pipelines, electric towers, solar and wind farms, and so forth). Using European Copernicus Sentinel-1 open data or COSMO-SkyMed data images and Persistent Scatterers techniques, the service is complementary to traditional survey methods, providing a long-term solution to ground instability monitoring. Rheticus®Displacement provides detailed information on: - Check of slope stability due to slow landslides movements; - Analysis of the presence of phenomena of instability in the preliminary and the final phase of the planning of works and infrastructures; - Monitoring the impact of the works and infrastructures construction on the slope stability; - Check of the results of the interventions of slope stabilization. Who is it for? - Governmental Institutions in charge of urban planning and land monitoring, infrastructure monitoring, civil protection in case of landslides and/or subsidence phenomena, and so forth; - Utility Providers (e.g. Water and Sewage Utilities, Transportation Utilities); - Stakeholders within Oil&Gas, Electric Power, Renewable Energy, Mining, and Construction Industries as well as within Engineering, Insurance, Business-to-Customer, Real Estate, Stock Exchange sectors; - Scientific Communities and NGOs. Applications Timely identification of subsidence phenomena and landslides, optimization of on site monitoring activities, planning of emergency maintenance interventions. Key Benefits - Timely information is provided automatically at affordable prices - Maps, reports and indices are actionable and available 24/7 from different platforms and devices - Saves time and resources normally dedicated to data search and processing and information production - Data and results are standardized and comparable over time Visit www.rheticus.eu and discover the LIVE DEMO data available.
identify and characterize the optimal sites for the installation of wind turbines
Forecast and monitor ocean winds and waves, Alternative Energy, Map hydroelectric and wind farms, Map and monitor of wind energy (wind farms)
One of the most critical aspects in the feasibility study of an on-shore / off-shore wind farm is the identification of the optimal site, through the preliminary analysis of the local wind regimes (wind reanalysis). Preciso® wind is a wind reanalysis service developed to identify and characterize the optimal sites for the installation of wind turbines, through wind modelling and reconstruction and without the need for long and expensive wind measurement campaigns. The activation of the Preciso® Wind service is very simple. The user must provide the coordinates of the sites chosen as potential location of a wind plant. After that, he can request a preliminary or producibility analysis. The preliminary analysis contains an estimation of the mean annual wind speed (m/s), at fixed heights from the ground. This analysis verifies also the presence of environmental restrictions in the area of interest, due for example to the presence of natural areas protected by the current laws. The producibility analysis offers the users also an estimate of the wind energy which can be theoretically produced in the site of interest. The wind data temporal series are converted in the produced energy using the power curves of one or more turbines, possibly supplied by the user. In this way, it is possible to evaluate the differences in performances between various turbine models and to analyze the obtained results at various heights, thus giving the user the possibility to choose the best investment. The results of the wind analysis are produced and delivered in few working days.
