NLR researches and develops image processing and analysis algorithms in order to provide valuable geospatial information for a variety of applications. Applications of earth observation include mobility, environment (water quality, climate change and land-use), defence and security. This is reflected by the EC Global Monitoring of the Environment and Security (GMES) programme and multiple defence and security programmes. Information derived from Earth observation has become an operational element in support of activities carried out by government agencies and industry. Supporting services to industry and governments are offered on a commercial basis by the so-called value adding industry. Together with these industries, NLR researches and develops tools and workstations for processing and analysis of imagery from satellites as well as from airborne sensors that are being used for both civil and defence applications.
